Identification Tips
1. Don't confuse crystal faces for cleavage surfaces in sulfur. Sulfur has no cleavage. A freshly chipped corner of the specimen will reveal this.
2. Sulfur is very soft and brittle and will crumble easily when rubbed against a streak plate or a glass plate, leaving a yellowish white powder.
3, Some specimens of sulfur are not lustrous like the one pictured above, but the bright canary yellow color remains the same.
4. Sulfur will emit a disagreeable, "rotten egg" odor when briskly rubbed against either a glass or streak plate or even your fingernail.
